Course Description

This course investigates areas in linguistics relevant to ESL teachers.  Students examine key linguistic concepts and definitions in phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax and semantics and their applications to teaching and learning English. The course explores ways of using research and generalizations derived from linguistics to inform teaching practice.

This course is designed to help students:

  • Extend their knowledge of linguistic fields relevant to the English language teacher
  • Use  insights from linguistics in teaching language skills
  • Develop linguistic analytical skills
  • Establish a solid basis for further graduate studies in the field of applied linguistics
  • Identify language systematic rules and ways speakers use it to communicate in different social settings
  • To distinguish between descriptive and prescriptive linguistics.
