Syllabus

Course Description :

Examines the nature of the rules governing the sound system of language with special emphasis on English. Introduces the study of the physiology of speech production and phonetic transcription through practical exercises. Students also examine inflectional and derivational rules in language and study word formation processes.

Course Objectives :

  • Develop an understanding of the internal functioning of language
  • Identify the smallest meaningful units of language
  • Develop a strong sense of systematicity in language
  • Learn how to analyze phonological and morphological processes
  • Develop a strong appreciation of the fields of phonology and morphology
