ENG 321 : Cultures in Contact

Course Description

This Course introduces students to the ways in which language and culture influence human interaction in a variety of cultural and interpersonal contexts. It covers a broad range of topics, including perception differences, worldview, identity, verbal and nonverbal styles of communication, and the effect of bias and conflicting value systems on cross‐cultural communication.

Course Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of the course, students will be able to:

  • Apply field work techniques and methods to investigate cultural behaviors
  • Describe the relationship between nonverbal communication code systems and verbal communication code systems.
  • Examine and analyze three specific social settings in which cultural variations play an important role: health care, education, and business
  • Analyze the different styles of persuasion preferred by various cultures
